Schmahl Science Workshops (SSW) is a non-profit partnership of students, parents, teachers, scientists, and engineers who have come together to foster the innate curiosity and love of science that exists among children.
We offer over 600 pre-K through 12th grade workshops in all fields of science. Our programs include camps; in-school, after school and home school workshops; and advanced student research. We also provide workshops for the California Science Standards and the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) tests. Many of our workshops are provided to schools that do not have the resources to include science as a regular part of their instructional program.
Our workshops are delivered in classroom, laboratory, mobile van or garage settings by talented scientists and engineers who help students discover learning science is fun. We bring our programs to anyone who wants to learn!
Like many start-ups in Silicon Valley, SSW began in a garage in 1996 with a group of four kids and their parents as a way to provide hands-on science education in a supportive environment.
Since then, SSW has grown tremendously. We’ve served over 100,000 students and over 8,000 teachers. Each of these students on average participates in 26 workshops a year resulting in over 1,500,000 student contacts since our founding.
Our mission is to prepare children of all backgrounds for a future where science and technology will dominate virtually every industry and vocation.
We believe that children are motivated to learn when their ideas are cultivated through the joy of designing and carrying out an experiment. Our workshops enable students to explore and invent what inspires them, and to develop the skills needed to achieve success in all areas of their lives.
